The Quang Duong Code: Serving Smashes and Sambal in Malaysia

The Quang Duong Code: Serving Smashes and Sambal in Malaysia

Sureena Shree Chandrasekar

We caught up with the Vietnamese American pickleball prodigy Quang Duong during his whirlwind trip to Malaysia for the Panas Cup 2025, held at the newly launched 9Pickle, Setia Alam, from April 8–13.

Quang flew in with his father and coach, Duc Duong (who we also interviewed, read his article here), and Vincent Siow (CEO of Panas Group and 9Pickle, who wasted no time showing him the local sights, food, and court action.

When Quang Duong touches down in Malaysia, he’s not just bringing heat to the court, he’s bringing an appetite, a chill vibe, and a banana. Just one bite of it, to be exact, every time he goes into a match.

First Impressions: From Twin Towers to Teh Tarik

“I think I had, like, three cups of teh tarik yesterday. Full sugar,” Quang laughs, already melting into the local flavor literally. “We went straight from the plane to the Twin Towers, then had nasi lemak... best one I’ve ever had, hands down.”

For a guy known for his laser focus during professional matches on the Professional Pickleball Association Tour (PPA), Quang’s off-court energy is relaxed, curious, and delightfully down to earth. Satay? Mee goreng? Durian? He’s tried it all.

“I had my doubts, but yeah, Malaysian durian beat Thailand’s. Vincent Siow was right.”

The Grind Behind the Greatness

Ranked #6 in the world, Quang’s routine is serious business. His weekly training plan includes split gym and court days, with two hours of pickleball and even a little tennis to keep things spicy.

But during tournaments? That’s when his unique quirks kick in.

“I don’t eat breakfast. Just hot tea, a bit of water... and one bite of a banana. One, not two. Superstitious maybe, but I’ve been doing it since my tennis days.”

That very routine once led him to eat nasi lemak every single day during a tournament in Kuching a couple of years back. The result? He lost the singles final but won doubles.

“Not bad, huh? Maybe nasi lemak’s my good luck charm.”

Off Court Secrets: Martial Arts and K-Pop

You might know Quang as a rising star on the PPA Tour, but here’s what you didn’t know: he’s got serious Muay Thai and kickboxing skills from his younger days. And when he’s not throwing punches or perfecting dinks? His brother Bao Duong, very much into Taekwondo, he added.

“I’m a foodie. I love cooking, trying new things. I’m a big Korean pop music fan. BTS, Aespa, Blackpink, you name it.”

He hasn’t had time for concerts yet, but we say someone’s gotta get this man backstage. You know at least one K-pop idol plays pickleball.

Olympic Dreams and PPA Realities

With Los Angeles set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, Quang’s eyes are firmly on the prize.

“Imagine, playing pickleball in the Olympics, in my hometown, and representing Vietnam... that would be the dream.”

But let’s not get it twisted. The Professional Pickleball Association Tour is no joke.

“There’s definitely some beef,” he admits. “But we’ve got respect for each other. On court, we’re trying to kill each other.

Off court? Some are chill and good friends like Tyson McGuffin, Jack Sock, James Ignatowich. Bao Duong (his younger brother, also on the rise) talks more than me. I just play and go back to rest.”

Final Rally

Quang’s Malaysia trip wasn’t just a promotional pit stop, it was a cultural deep dive, a flavor adventure, and a masterclass in elite athlete rituals. From eating nasi lemak daily to prepping in total silence (no headphones, no music), the man is a blend of mystery and method.

Before we wrapped up, Quang shouted out to the fans:  “Hello, I’m Quang Duong, and I’m here with Buddy from Pickle361.” (After a few retakes, but hey, he dinks better than he intros, and we love him for it.)

Quang Duong’s participation in the Panas Cup 2025 at 9Pickle Arena, Setia Alam, was a landmark moment for pickleball in Malaysia. His exhibition matches and interactions with local players not only showcased his exceptional skills, but also ignited major enthusiasm for the sport among fans and aspiring athletes.

Accompanied by his father and coach, Duc Duong, and Vincent Siow, Quang's presence brought international attention to the Panas Cup tournament, emphasizing the growing prominence of pickleball in Asia.

The event featured a RM55,000 prize pool, drew top regional talent, and highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to elevating pickleball. Quang's visit didn't just inspire players, it gave them a glimpse of what’s possible when culture, discipline, and global ambition collide.
