Pickleball - A Sport Born from Backyard Fun, Was Almost Called “Paddle Tennis”

Move over badminton - there’s a new game in town, and it’s taking Malaysia by storm! Pickleball is like a mash-up of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, all rolled into one ridiculously fun sport.

It’s easy to learn, super social, and a fantastic way to break a sweat without feeling like you’re working out.

The History of the Game

Believe it or not, pickleball started back in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Three dads - Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum - wanted to keep their kids entertained, so they grabbed a badminton court, a plastic ball with holes, and some wooden paddles.

What started as a backyard game has exploded into one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, with pro tournaments, leagues, and a passionate global fan base.

But did you know pickleball was almost called “Paddle Tennis”? The founders considered a more straightforward name, but “pickleball” stuck. And honestly, can you imagine calling it anything else?

As for the name itself, there are two theories. Some say it was named after the Pritchard family’s dog, Pickles, who loved chasing stray balls. Others believe it came from the term “pickle boat,” referring to a mixed-crew rowing team - just like how pickleball blends elements of different sports!

Today, professional pickleball players are making serious money, with six-figure prize earnings, brand sponsorships, and a growing global fanbase. And with over 36.5 million players in the U.S. alone (as of 2023), it’s officially one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide - and Malaysia is catching on quickly!

Why Malaysians Are Hooked

Pickleball is played on a small court with a paddle and a lightweight plastic ball, making it perfect for fast-paced rallies.

Unlike tennis, you don’t need insane stamina or powerful swings, so it’s great for all ages and fitness levels.

More Malaysians are picking it up, and local parks and sports centers are setting up courts to meet the growing demand.

If you’ve played badminton or tennis before, you’ll love the quick reflexes and smart strategies involved.

And if you’re brand new to racquet sports? No worries - you’ll be rallying like a pro in no time!

The Community is Booming

Pickleball fever is spreading fast! Coaching clinics and social games are popping up everywhere, making it easy to jump in and start playing.

Whether you’re just in it for fun or have a competitive streak, the pickleball community is welcoming and ready to help you level up.

Looking for a fun, social, and exciting way to stay active? Pickleball might just be your new obsession.

Once you step onto the court, there’s no turning back!

From a backyard pastime to an international sensation, pickleball proves that sometimes, the best ideas start with just a couple of paddles, a wiffle ball, and a whole lot of fun!
